May 20, 2007 THE IMMIGRATION QUAGMIRE
Beside the abomination
we witness in the Middle East, the immigration situation in the US is
producing a lot of ink and the media are documenting the worthless
efforts being made to find a fair solution.
Seven to 20 millions perhaps more illegal immigrants are suspected to be in the US already, and politicians are ready, once again, to offer them some kind of amnesty and build thousands of miles of walls on the Mexican border that is not going to stop many. ![]() The largest group is made of Mexicans but they also come from all over Central and South America, Cuba, Haiti, Canada, China, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Viet Nam S. Is a Wall, no matter how long, no matter how high going to stop desperate people? Thousands have died at sea in their attempt to reach the United States shores. Are we going to build another wall between the US and Canada, this other access to the land of Lincoln? Why isn’t the government systematically going after the lawbreakers? And who will repeat President Ronald Reagan’s famous words to USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev “Tear down this wall” ? We are told that workers are needed in the agricultural sector and in many services. Hotels and restaurants are employing illegal aliens and the construction business could not function without them. In the same times crimes, attributed to individuals having crossed the borders unauthorized, have increased in dramatic proportions. ![]()
After September 11 of 2001, “a date which will live in
infamy” to quote President Franklin D. Roosevelt in December 1941 referring to the Attack on Pearl Harbour, the
Bush administration received the full support of the nation to go after
the perpetrators of one of the worst disasters America has suffered. It
was to seek Osama Bin Laden and his cohort in Afghanistan with the
support of many nations. But the aim was reset on Iraq and his dictator
against world opposition. We know the result and America is certainly
not safer today.
Numerous people have applied for citizenship going through the legal
processes and many are still waiting for approval but all those who are
already here not having made their applications in the embassies of
their countries will take preseance over law abiding individual. Where
is Justice?Blaming the present administration for its incompetence is certainly appropriate but senators and representatives of all parties bear responsibility as they manoeuvre through this difficult situation in order to secure their jobs instead of having the fortitude to do what is necessary rather than trying to be politically correct. Illegal immigrants go to the streets making demands. They should all be arrested, evaluated and deported, except for political refugees in danger of being send to prison or even been killed for their ideas. Once in their country they can apply for visas allowing them to come to the US either temporarily or permanently depending upon the needs of their host. It has been said that they contribute to the wealth of this country but billions of dollars are sent to their countries of origin. Of course many industries benefit from the situation as they can
utilize cheap labor, often paying a lot less than minimum wages.
Illegality goes both ways. This country has been made what it is because of people from all horizons, they came to the New World seeing the opportunity to enhance their lives by contributing to the common wealth. But they came legally, respecting the laws of the hosting land. It is time for the politicians to listen to the voice of the people suffering from their incompetence or, worse, their personal interests. Other countries are plagued in the same manner and their elected officials show the similar inertia, either in the name of ambition, greed or misguided morality. Vive la démocratie ! Claude
