A
last glance to 2006 and best
wishes for 2007
In the dawn of the New Year I look back to 2006 that saw the death of
two presidents. Gerald Ford, one of the most honest former resident of
the White House who has sacrificed his chances to be elected by
pardoning Richard Nixon in an effort to reunite the country.
The other, Saddam Hussein, the barbaric dictator is gone, leaving a bloody heritage. The Kurds wanted him to live through the trial of the genocide he perpetrated upon their people. The exiled Iraqis are celebrating. There were manifestations of anger amongst the Ba'ath party members and the Sunnis. The Shiites were delighted. The European nations disagreed since all of them have abolished the death penalty. The death toll of the American soldiers has reached 3000 as people celebrated the year’s end in festive fashion. Innumerable Iraqis are grieving le loss of family members and neighbors. How many more have died since the Americans “liberated” the country? Saddam is credited with hundred of thousands of deaths but how many have been killed since two wars ravaged Iraq? It took a long time for the Americans to realize the amount of mistakes and the deceit perpetrated by the G.W.Bush administration but, in January, the democrats took control of both the House of Representatives and the Congress. What will happen next is the subject of numerous speculations and the Dems will have to prove that they have a backbone. Everyone speaks of bi partisanship but the rivalries are still active. One is to wonder if these elected officials are working for the good of their constituents or if it is still a game of politics where one party opposes the other instead of cooperating in an effort to be productive. Politics is dirty business, manipulations by lobbyists is the rule of the game and, as we have seen this past year, greed and sex are omnipresent amongst these very people who should make every effort to be deserving of the confidence of the nation. We have witnessed the obscene rewards given to CEO s of failing corporations, multimillionaire religious leaders owners of luxurious mansions spending vacations gambling in Vegas. The press has exposed paedophiles among priests and politicians. The middle class is shrinking and large corporations have outsourced to take advantage of low wages in other countries adding to the unemployment already critical due to millions and millions of illegal aliens being exploited by greedy businessmen. The future doesn’t look full of too many promises but it is the nature of man to adjust and we will face tomorrow as we have done in previous years. And so, let me wish you as happy a new year as we can be mustered. Claude Seguy
